I had an “imaginary friend” that I played with pretty much constantly from around age 2-5. One day I told my mom that he died and I never mentioned him again.
I think it could have been a deceased family member.

When my youngest was 3 my two kids, sister, and I went to a family reunion in Morgan City. On the way back the little one starts talking to the space next to his car seat. After a couple of minutes we asked who he was talking to and he said Grandpa. My father died two years before my little one was born, and his other grandfather was alive.
