To put a little lagniappe on it, we have gone to war with many of those groups since slavery ended and yet, they thrive.

I have often used the Japanese as exhibit #1 in this comparison.

I grew up during that era. "colored" people were everywhere and NOBODY 'hated' them. I My first memory was as a 3-yr old when Pearl Harbor was bombed - I had no idea of any details but I knew afterwards that is was all because of 'the JAPs.' Pure white-hot hatred was universal for anything "JAP." It was truly the only hatred that I ever recognized as literally being palpable. Hatred towards Germany seemed to be limited to Hitler as a person. Not so, the JAPs.

And yet, wishing a generation there is zero residual hatred for Japanese - they are revered for their individual character.

Interestingly, my best friend is Japanese. His parents and their family were interred after the bombing ... thanks democrats. They did get reparations

This puts us close to the same age Born 9/38). I agree with everything you're saying, except for the Germans. I had several considerably older 1st cousins who served in the European theater. That probably sparked the German feelings.

That's because despite all of the hate we had for the Japanese, they proved to be hard workers. And if there's anything that the Greatest Generation respected was hard work.
