Generational prosecutors who turned their power into a successful law firm. The Murdaugh firm made hundreds of millions of dollars suing railroads in personal injury cases. They were the reason the South Carolina General Assembly changed our venue statute for civil suits. It used to be an injured party could sue in any county where the corporation did business. So if you had a railroad injury case 100 miles from Hampton you could still sue them there and get a huge settlement, because the Murdaughs knew all the potential jurors if it went to trial.

I believe their grandpappy was a scalawag who won a $90 contract to grow sorghum for the Spanish-American war.
