He said he doesn’t want them bringing work and outside life to work, but then he said he wants to have a relationship with them and to know what is going on in their lives. This makes no sense.

Welcome to basically every sentence uttered by every coach in any sport at any level. It all ostensibly sounds motivating or inspiring or empowering or some other nebulous bullshite feeling. But when you peek under the hood at the actual substance, it's utter nonsense.
