HAVERHILL - A Simmons University student from Haverhill died in an accident on vacation in Mexico.

Leah Pearse was in Cancun January 6 when, according to her obituary, she tried to "enter her Airbnb through the third-floor balcony because the keys had been locked inside. Tragically she slipped, fell, and died instantly."

Pearse was just 20 years old. She was a 2020 graduate of Haverhill High School and was a junior at Simmons studying nursing.

University President Lynn Perry Wooten said the campus was "heartbroken" by her death.

"Known for her confidence, compassion, and sense of humor, Leah brought out the best in others. Her lifelong goal was to become a nurse and she was an outstanding student in the accelerated five-year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science nursing degree program," Wooten said in a statement Thursday.

She should have tethered herself with a rope to the balcony using her nose ring as the safety latch.

While this is tragic, and I feel horrible for her friends and family, but this seems more like Darwin at work than an accident. And I hate to say it like that.

Why would anyone think it's a good idea to climb 3 stories to get in an Airbnb? I can understand if you're frustrated and want to get in, especially if you've been out all day, but there's just too much shite that can go wrong and it doesn't take much of a fall to kill or seriously injure yourself. I'd imagine it's an even more difficult feat for smaller females.

I wonder if she even called the people who owned the Airbnb. I know that can be frustrating to do at some places, but it'd be interesting to figure where her mindset was and what led to her attempting to scale up 3 stories.

Sorry for her family but platitudes like this -

quote:

University President Lynn Perry Wooten said the campus was "heartbroken" by her death.

"Known for her confidence, compassion, and sense of humor, Leah brought out the best in others. Is so disingenuous. I'm sure the University President knew all 1,700 students by name, major, and their traits.
