CVS Sued: Nurse Practitioner Fired Refusing to Prescribe Birth Control

If prescribing birth control goes against your faith, don't work in a job that expects you to prescribe birth control. It's really that simple. The rights of the public to obtain healthcare and legal drugs from a clinic do not get thrown out the window because of your religious beliefs. If you are uncomfortable doing something, don't apply for a job where that something is part of the job description.

Texas resident J. Robyn Strader said in the suit that her Baptist faith prevents her from prescribing contraceptive and abortion-inducing drugs. She said that for 6½ years, CVS granted her a religious accommodation to forgo having to prescribe the drugs at the CVS MinuteClinic where she worked. When customers needed the prescriptions, she would refer them to a colleague or another CVS MinuteClinic. But in August 2021, CVS said it was revoking all religious accommodations.

Where is this right in the Constitution/Bill of Rights? Where is the right to birth control enshrined in the law?
And why would this imaginary right be greater than the actual religious rights of the nurse practitioner?
Why can’t this allegedly aggrieved patient go elsewhere to obtain birth control?

I'm all for women's rights and that includes the right to choose, but it sounds like this lady was making reasonable accommodation so I don't agree with CVS on this one

Yeah this reminds me of that Kentucky Clerk of Court that refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Interesting timing to "all of a sudden" revoke all religious accomodations.
These corporations are huge sacks of shite.

Never heard of a Baptist Church that prevents this.

CVS isn’t winning this one.

I could be on both sides of this.
On one hand- private company can do what it wants, have whatever policy it wants. If the private company doesn't want to employ certain religions, so be it.

quote:A nurse practitioner may desire to be one because they can give life (healing) and improve the lives of others. Prescribing abortive drugs flies in the face of the nature of the job, itself.

Also, if you'd like to change the constitution to align it with your belief that there is some sort of collective right rather than an individual right, then you are free to get that process started by reaching out to your representatives.

In 2023 A.D. why would anyone need a prescription to buy birth control pills ?
I would rather a woman to have the Pill than to choose to have an abortion.

CVS reneging on their promise to their employee.

So this fine Christian woman must risk eternal damnation and provide tools to allow sluts to pop that thang till it rots?
How intolerant, uninclusive and bigotted you are.

Well, earlier in your copy/paste it clearly says:
quote:
for 6½ years, CVS granted her a religious accommodation to forgo having to prescribe the drugs at the CVS MinuteClinic where she worked. When customers needed the prescriptions, she would refer them to a colleague or another CVS MinuteClinic
So she was already employed there and granted an exemption, which they decided to revoke and it likely violated her constitutional rights given that there was precedent.
CVS probably screwed the pooch on this one. They could've nitpicked her attendance or records or found some pile of minor infractions that would mount up enough to result in her termination if they wanted her gone, but they chose instead to walk the woke line, and it'll likely cost them.
They hired her fully understanding her beliefs and granting her an exemption based upon said beliefs. Then, they changed the rules. Can they do that? Sure. But will there be consequences for doing it? Yep.

The real crime here is that NPs are allowed to practice medicine without a medical degree

Someone explain to me how being shitty at your job is your religion.

So, people should be prohibited from a career because they don’t want to perform .1% of the full scope of it based on a legitimate religious belief?
Should a Hindu lawyer have to defend a beef processing company in a criminal action regardless of the fact that killing cows violates his faith? Should a catholic OBGYN be required to perform an abortion if he lives in a pro-choice state? What about a 80 year old baptist doctor who started practicing when birth control or abortion was illegal (in line with his religious beliefs) and then the law changes?
I say all this as someone who is pro-choice. Such a ridiculous, absolutist position to take. This isn’t a situation where anything is life threatening. No one is throwing someone’s right to healthcare away. The quote literally says she refers them to someone who will provide what they need which is sometimes in the same building. She’s not demanding that CVS stop dealing the meds—it’s a purely personal decision.

As a physician she has all the right in the world to not prescribe certain medications. However, her employer can fire her for not doing this and this isn’t a reasonable accommodation like a wheelchair or Sundays off.
