re: 2023 Spring Garden Thread

Little Sausage and I finished up the evening picking a mess of dewberries.

Ok it’s about to get pic heavy. Finally did a good walkthrough this morning and got a bunch of pictures. Progress report:

Here’s a shot of the whole garden.


Cucumbers are coming along slowly. They always seem to start slow. I know they’re going to take off pretty soon though.


Beans


Zucchini and yellow straightneck are coming along and are still protected for now.


Purple hulls


Edamame


No fruit set on the eggplant yet. But they are loaded with flowers and looking good.


Peppers: California Wonder, Shishito, and Jimmy Nardello. I left out the jalapeño since I just transplanted some new plants recently. So not much progress on them.




Tomatoes:

Got my first Paul Robeson’s coming up.


Cherokee Purples are doing well.


Big Beefs are loaded.


Mortgage Lifters are a little behind the others. But we’re finally getting some.


Romas. Plants are really bushy, but there are a lot of tomatoes in there.



Amish Paste


Sunflowers with butternut squash in the middle. The butternut are coming along slowly. But if they’re like every other cucurbit I’ve ever grown, they’ll take off soon and there’ll be no stopping them.



Crimson Sweet watermelon.


Onions are still rolling along, but I only really have a few that are forming bulbs. Which is better than I’ve done in the past. I guess I still haven’t figured these things out.


And here’s the blue hubbard. No vine borers have been caught on the sticky traps yet. None in the pheromone trap either. No signs of eggs. I’m staying vigilant.


Also have a bunch of strawberries coming up, and a few blueberries and blackberries. Nothing picture worthy, and I think that’s enough pics for now.

Any sign of squash bugs? I think they can cause that to happen. I don’t have that much experience with squash, so I don’t think I can be of too much help.

You could have my squash plants where only a few came up in the whole row on the first planting. I replanted but those originals look pretty damn weak. I think our weather here has thrown the squash off. We’ve had waves of cool fronts that pushed night temps low. Or it’s the crappy topsoil I had delivered.

I was going to make a witty comment about there only being 2 1/2 days left in tax season and how after that I could start hardening myself off like you would transition a seedling out into the sun....but that just sounds weird.

I really need the rain to hold off this next weekend. I've got so much to do but it looks like I won't have much opportunity. I have my tomatoes in the ground but that is it. Still need to finish weeding the rest of the garden, put peppers in the ground, and start my beans and cucumbers.

I'm also hoping to get a break in the weather to see if my hive split resulted in some mated queens.

Also have plans to build another chicken coop to replace the current one. It rode out Laura and Delta like a champ and only needed shingles replaced but it also flooded so the floor board is rotting out. This one will be raised off the ground though.

Mine are struggling too. Planted seeds a few weeks ago after that last cold snap. I’ve been tempted to grab some from the nursery. Same with the cucumbers.

those plans look cool that’d be a coop de ville for sure. That litter tray thing looks like a PITA though. Maybe better to just have a drop thru floor of hardware cloth

speaking of compost anyone got an idea of what these volunteers are in my flower bed? Squash?

Looking fantastic c… I can’t thank you enough for your “free plants from cuttings” thread a while back. I’ve done just that from my mom’s garden with these…. And they’re all doing great!

Really enjoying this Coleus as well, also started from seed. Apparently this can be propagated from cuttings as well.

Looks awesome! Get ready for the salvia to take over. It's about like mint.
