Non contract shuttle drills you run to prepare for combine
Don’t understand opt outs
You can easily pull a hammy or shred a knee running meaningless combine events

If the odds are more than 0.0% you’re risking millions. Imagine holding a 3 million dollar lottery and taking it on a meaningless trip to your parents house to take pictures with it instead of straight to the claims office.

It is worth it considering you can substantially improve your draft stock by performing well at the combine. No one is improving their draft stock based off of one bowl game.

How many players have had big injuries at the combine?

I can Think of at least 1 big bowl game injury

Maybe so. But if the very low risk of the player getting hurt DOES occur, are you going supplement the potential income he just lost? It seems only right since you want him to play to increase YOUR entertainment benefit.

I would love to see every guy play. As a 40 year old man I would tell these kids the opportunity to play college football is so short. Don't waste any game because once the opportunity ends you never get it again. But as a fan I'm never going to ridicule a kid for doing what he thinks is best for HIS life simply because it may diminish my entertainment value as a fan. Even if I might think the decision is "wrong" or misguided.

It’s about being able to focus and prep on the combine drills more than getting hurt. What part don’t you guys understand?

Also, big injuries don’t mean the same as they used to. Jameson Williams tore his ACL last year and was still drafted high. If Bryce Young and Will Anderson tear their ACLs or something less they will still go 1-2 in the draft.

Bowl game injury insurance could help.

First you can get hurt at any time. So yes, you can tear your ACL in a bowl game.

Examples Jaylon Smith and then my work computer won't allow me to link Jake Butt the TE from Michigan.

However, these guys aren't opting out to go to Cabo. They immediately start training for the combine. Can you injure yourself that way. Yes but you are preparing for your final interview so to speak. There is enough tape for NFl coaches from your college career. They don't need to see a bowl game tape.

I really am tempted to do a little research study. The data probably already exists. My guess is that for the majority of these guys, there is more risk (legal and health) away from the team than with.

There may be some relevance but I’m guessing it’s true regardless of SES. E.g., Brennan trips on a dock…. Terrible incident with Dellahousee and all those kickers a few years back…. Injury after injury and not to mention the many many arrests we see when just out of school.

The plain truth is the guys opting out just don't want to frick with their school programs any more. They are over it, done with it. Moving on. Time to get with their agents and plan negotiating strategies for their big pay day.

I'm not even sure bowl game injuries are much of a factor. I'd like to see a study of bowl game injuries vs NFL prep practice injuries.

I just wonder if KB could have improved his draft stock(if he is eligible) by having a great bowl game performance, even if it has just been a dozen plays where he was targeted 5-6 times?
He has had the shortest "outstanding" LSU career seen since IMO Cecil Collins. Lots of flash but no consistency or staying power in the dominant role.
Maybe he has shown the NFL scouts enough to be drafted highly but gotten think there will be doubts about his heart and fight when things are a bit tough.

You’re eliminating the risk of catastrophic injuries from contact. That’s all. If the dude is a 1st or a 2nd round pick I’m cool with the opt outs. Gives someone else a chance to prove themselves in the moment.

You completely missed his point

They have to do training between now and the combine and could risk injury in training as well

So you are saying I still get the 3 mill but at the same time being loyal to my family? Sounds like a win-win

I agree 110 percent. Players need to finish what they started with teammates and
then move on.

They have to do this anyway. Even after a bowl game. The bowl game just presents another opportunity for injury. If I had to guess I'd say a person is more likely to get injured in a game than in training. Though it could happen in training as well.
