Hallmark blows Dan Harmon's mind with Sister Swap films

*"Sister Swap" does not pertain to your second favorite PornHub category.
Dan Harmon realizes that Hallmark released almost identical films last Christmas (same casts, writers, etc.).
He goes on an appreciative rant and then the films' creators and stars reveal their reasons (which is pretty awesome).
Kudos to Hallmark for being experimental and trusting their audience.

Harmon’s confusion was assuaged when the people who made the film showed up in the comments. The films’ co-screenwriter, Zac Hug, explained what Hallmark was trying to do with the movies.
“Quick note on this, the task in writing was to make sure the audience didn’t have to see them both but were rewarded if they did. Hallmark also got on board with my sister and me writing them together,” Hug wrote.
Williams-Paisley confirmed that the decision to combine the two films was to do something unprecedented with a Hallmark production. "We wanted to do something outside the box for the genre but also stay in the genre and my sister came up with this brilliant idea of two films that take place in the same time frame and sometimes overlap," Williams-Paisley commented.
Executive producer Neal Dodson further clarified things for Harmon.
"We had one editor and edited them in tandem," he wrote. "They share 9 scenes, with different edits to those scenes that favor whichever sister's movie it is."
Harmon clearly understands the medium of film—he created the hit series “Community” and “Rick and Morty”—yet he missed the fact that “Sister Swap” was a total revolution in the art of making Hallmark films.
After hearing about the movies from the artists themselves, he changed his mind and said the films were "cinematically unprecedented."
The films are truly a departure from the usual movie format, not just for Hallmark, but TV movies in general. But, before we get too excited, the productions also probably saved a few nickels by shooting two films at the same time.

Two real life actress sisters wanted to each make a Hallmark movie costarring the other sister.
They came up with the idea of two movies that take place at the same time, but each movie focuses on a different sister.
Since the movies are in the same time period, whenever the sisters interact, the interaction appears in both films. But the interactions are shot and edited differently, so that the focus is on the sister who is the "star" of that film.

So we should temper our excitement since they didn't spend more money shooting them separately?
I think this was a rather cool concept for Hallmark to try out. Regardless if they saved a little money in the process.

This is actually a fairly cool idea I think.
I don't really want to watch these, but I'd be interested in something like this in a genre or area that I liked.
I remember thinking the Lion King 1 and 1/2 was kinda cool because it was in a similar vein as this.

They did this to save money and they know their audience is nursing homes and women on disability

Saving money was probably a big influence, but that influence led them to a creative and unique idea. They didn't rest on their laurels and cut costs in the typical way. They figured out a way to save money while also delivering to the audience something they have not seen before

Based on this board and podcasts, it seems like a lot of men are watching these movies

And me. And Dan Harmon.
I saw both last year I think. Not bad but nothing remarkable.

See, what you need to do is put your VHS copy of the Wizard of Oz into the VCR and press play. When the MGM lion roars, after the third roar, hit play on the cd player of your hi-fi stereo system to start Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. You should already be high asf beforehand, but to be sure you see the dark side of the rainbow, continue smoking as Dorothy follows the yellow brick road, man.

In defense of the Sister Swap videos on Pornhub, they are pretty frigging awesome.

This has been done quite a bit within episodes of TV shows. HIMYM is the first one that comes to mind but I'm sure other shows like Modern Family and well before those 2 have done the same story from multiple points of view.

It's not really a new one. I've seen it done mostly in TV. The first Netflix season of Arrested Development and the Showtime series The Affair both do it to varying degrees.
Regardless, I would like to see more movies like this. IMO the MCU should delve into doing this as it would help strengthen the "it's all connected" theme.

I love how he can appreciate the effort to make it, even if it isn't your thing.
