Without fans (TV viewers, ticket sales, donations, concessions, merchandise, etc.) college football as we know it wouldn't exist.

As we know it being the key phrase. The other 90+% of college sports exist with out all that because at the end of the day it’s an extra curricular activity designed for the kids. The players that opt out of bowls are the 1-5% or so that have potential pro careers. If you only watch because of them fine but they owe you nothing least of all playing in an exhibition game that exist solely as content for TV networks.
