I am not following this.. Why did he plead guilty if he could not be retried ?

He was tried for 2nd degree murder. However, he was convicted 10-2 on a lesser charge of manslaughter. The USSC decision held the conviction was unconstitutional. So he had to be retried again, but he couldn't be retried for 2nd degree murder. So he was going to be retried for manslaughter. Rather than be retried he pled guilty.
