10 years, minus time served
quote:
After the U.S. Supreme Court's 2020 ruling on split verdicts, Gasser was granted a new trial. Prosecutors and Ciolino spent the next year battling in court over whether the state could retry him on the murder charge.
The Louisiana Supreme Court ultimately ruled earlier this year that Gasser couldn't be retried on the murder charge, citing double jeopardy laws which bar a person from being prosecuted twice for the same crime.
Gasser will receive credit for time served, Ciolino said, though he wasn't sure exactly when his client might be eligible for release from prison.

Ah, zero context to a difficult situation.

While the dude killed Joe McKnight, there as definitely more to it than this broad statement.

I am not following this.. Why did he plead guilty if he could not be retried ?

He was tried for 2nd degree murder. However, he was convicted 10-2 on a lesser charge of manslaughter. The USSC decision held the conviction was unconstitutional. So he had to be retried again, but he couldn't be retried for 2nd degree murder. So he was going to be retried for manslaughter. Rather than be retried he pled guilty.

Seems like a weird decision unless his time served already is going to end up basically being his entire plea.

he got 30 years first time around, not pleading to 10, means he will likely serve just over 5 years. Which he probably already has done 75% of that

This guy had a prior incident where he road raged at someone, they called the number on his truck. The call went to him and he followed that person to a gas station to confront him etc. He's a real cock sucker.
