You can "google" and confirm but code for a fixed unit is 5 feet away from doors, windows, and any fresh air intakes. When I had a portable unit, I always kept it in my open air carport (not garage)....it was probably at least 10-15 feet away from doors/windows.

Fixed units all have enclosures but many have suggested taking the sides off and/or opening the top if it is not raining and hot outside.
