And i would get 308, 270, 30-06 or even 243 for kid depending on age. 308 is probably best just because of ease to find ammo.
Low end budget, get savage axis.
High end... limitless

This is all spot on. I would add a 6.5 CM although some people love to hate it.
7MM-08 is great but I'd stay away from it. Ammo is too hard to find and more expensive than any of the above.
