I guess it's also possible that some of the Targaryens might be immune to fire (think Daenerys)?
I don't believe that's a common trait, because we've seen some of them get burned (think Daenerys' brother). Laena Velaryon also got smoked in HotD, with Valyrian blood.
Surely the real answer is because it's a TV show and they're setting up future conflict — the dragon could've still killed them in other ways — but it's kind of interesting to consider that it might at least be some sort of mythos in that universe.
