It is that rare movie that knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to be anything but what it wants to be. It is, in that regard, perfect.
You know what makes it even more rare? It took the female characters out of the story entirely. Only passages from the sea chapters. Nothing from when they're in port and interacting with women.

There aren't many female characters in the books. Jack's wife Sophia, her mother, her cousin Diana, Molley Harte. Clarissa Oakes has an entire book in her name. You also have Mrs. Broad the innkeeper, and the two island girls Sarah and Emily. Women are mostly minor characters. The movie deals with life at sea and the chase at sea. It was very rare for women to be allowed on ships. Women in port would be girls in bars and whores. That's why we have Black Sails.
