I’m seeing mature boxwoods turn yellow all over the area. What’s with this? Too much rain last month?

Boxwood Dieback. It’s becoming more and more prevalent around South Louisiana.

Boxwoods have to be the most unremarkable shrub.

Man I hate seeing that there’s very little you can do to treat dieback

I’ve learned that boxwoods dying is kind of just what they do. It’s also damn near impossible to replace the ones that die with one that matches the rest of a hedge. I had them at my last house. Will never plant them again. Too many alternatives.

Also agree that they are totally unremarkable.

Lots of good options. LSU ag suggests dwarf yaupon holly or inkberry holly. They also suggest other hollys, Podocarpus, distylium, arborvitae, and yew depending on your application. I’m sure some others that know more about plants than me have some suggestions as well.

I just got super frustrated with the ones at my last house so I researched the issue a good bit when I was planning our new landscaping.

Compacta holly is a great substitute except they get a little larger than boxwoods.

How much of this is being spread by landscape companies who are going house to house trimming boxwoods?

If you aren’t trimming your own boxwoods you may want to start

We just removed all of our boxwoods over the last two weekends.
We were seeing a lot of dieback or root rot and the amount of wasp they were holding has been crazy. My wife has been stung many times over the last two years while working on the bushes.
We pulled 28 wasp nest out of the bushes. The poor wife was wearing a damn bee suit almost the entire time we were working on them.

One of my two entry way boxwoods are dying and it looks terrible

Trying to come up with a better species to highlight the front entryway

Horsetail is very invasive, hard to contain, and very hard to kill.

We planted Mexican Feather Grass instead of the little boxwood suggested in our landscape plan. They are uniform, beautiful, and show a lot of movement.
