hrow it to Malik, take the easy 4-5 yards and set up 2nd and 5. Having said that, when Josh Williams as the "checkdown" is only 1-2 yards shallower than 3 receivers in the pattern, that's not a great idea either
That play is designed to be a quick pass. It’s got quick outs, hooks and hitches all over it. It is called to take advantage of zones which Auburn was clearly in.
I don’t mean to pile it on the kid but he has to pick someone to throw it to at the snap. The routes aren’t designed for the QB to read once he sees the coverage.
For instance Jenkins’ route you would never throw to once you see that he is open, it’s a long arse throw across the field with the defense able to use the sideline as a defender. The only benefit of that route is to get it to him while the defender is going to his zone. It’s essentially a run play in that regard, a body punch. You wait to throw and it’s an easy interception.
Boutte (I think that is him) appears to have been open as well. Inside his defender sitting in the throwing lane. You don’t throw that one either once he is there, because it is guaranteed to be defended. But if you see the defender is playing behind him you throw it because that guaranteed defender is now challenging a ball carrier rather than a ball in the air.
I know it’s one play but it’s clearly the offensive problem - we are calling plays that the QB is unwilling to execute. It’s a matter of trust in himself and his WRs and has to get better.
