I would just say it would only be an unnecessary add-on... once he's convicted on the homicide counts he's already getting the max sentence of life without parole

I'm not sure that's how it's supposed to work. If a person has committed multiple crimes they should be charged on ALL of them. It's not like the judge will say "ok, he was found guilty of the first murder and will go to jail for life for that, so we'll drop the other murder charges because they don't matter". It's how people get to where they are to serve multiple life sentences.

There's also the optics of it...it implies that only white people can be racist and commit hate crimes (when was the last time a minority was charged with one?), which just furthers the division and belief that black people cannot be racist, so they act with impunity.

Nah, frick that. We can't allow hate crime to get tacked on only when the colors line up a certain way. They are either all hate crimes, especially in ridiculously obvious cases like this, or none of them are.
