I can understand it if it was 4th down from inside the 20.... but not in this case.

Payton put his team one jump ball away from a loss.

Yeah, all Brees had to do was fall down or fumble the ball and the Chargers get the ball in prime field position. Luckily though, that didn't happen. Seemed a little too risky for better kick coverage and a few seconds off of the clock.

i called the play before it happened, but he should have run around across the end zone first to burn off a few more seconds. still a risky call anyway you look at it. so many things could've gone wrong there.

clock management is not our forte

I agree...i didn't like the call. Either way, the Chargers would have gotten the ball around midfield with one play left. I would rather them have to make the 2 pt conversion or go to overtime to win the game if they actually completed the hail mary.

Dumb call. If the guy runs back the kick after the safety we lose.

Made no sense to me.

what if San Diego would have blitzed, Brees would have to outrun them for the safety and he's not that fast, it shows you Norv Turner knows nothing about defense

same guy was going to return the punt, at least this way it takes the block punt out of the equation.

Up by 6 = decent call. Up by 7 = bad call.

Good call, bad execution.

If the O-line would have made one good block, that's two more seconds off the clock.

As it turns out, the Chargers had one second left after the kickoff.

If the offense would have executed at all on that play, we would be congratulating Payton on a brilliant call.

Also...

Taking the safety means no blocked punt. Taking the safety gives us a free kick with less time.

I agree 100% with the call.

I think you have to be in the endzone to throw it out the back for a safety, not still in the field of play and throw it out the back, that would be an incomplete pass and San Diego would get the ball at the line of scrimmage, so that is what I'm talking about, what if they would have tackled him before he made it to the endzone?

lol, if you throw the ball backwards it can NEVER be an incomplete pass.

Ya'll are some dumb sons bitches. That was a great play call, Brees should have just burned a little more time off the clock first. The call was great, execution was a little sloppy, that's all. Some of you brain dead fricks don't know shite about strategy. fricking winny poo wimp bitches. STFU, we won. Go to hell motherfrickers.

in theory it was a good decision...

brees kills 6 secs...and we kick...

if we were afraid of sproles return, then we avoid a long punt to him.

but the problem was we put in a rookie kicker who ends up kicking to sproles anyway, and he gets a scarily good return...enouhg of one to set up a jumpball...

it was supposed to work out as a squib kick..they have the ball on their 35 or so with 3 secs....1 play....they can't reach the endzone on a single throw....

so good decision by payton.for the first time i got the impression that he was thinking through the situation and not just impetuously making calls...but he should have either recognized the shortcomings of his kicker or used someone else. or squib
