What makes the superchargers so special that they can charge a battery in 30 minutes but a 50 amp wall charger takes 8 hours?

50 amp x 240v = 12kW
Superchargers can charge at 150kW or 250kW, so roughly 10 or 20 times as fast. And they charge the battery directly with DC, bypassing the car's charger.

Ohms Law tells me you either have to up the amperage or up the voltage.
I have not checked into it but the superchargers probably have a 480 volt line coming in. That is not a common voltage for residential but is for commercial or industrial applications. The voltage is then transformed to proper voltage for charging and the amperage is proportionally increased. Bottom line, some combination of an increase in voltage or amperage is needed for faster charging.
