Black wire from the new switch should connect to the black hot wire in the box, white to neutral, green to ground, the wire with the red strip goes to the light itself. To do that, find the black wire in the junction box that is cold when the power is on. That's the wire that is connected to the light.

This. ^

Neutral to Neutral
Ground to Ground(s)
Now you probably have two black conductors in the gang box. One from the light and one that is source power from the breaker panel. You will need to differentiate between those two.
The black wire that is source power from the breaker panel should tie to the switch's black.
The Red "load" wire should be tied to the light's hot conductor which is probably also a black wire.

I wired gr to gr. Neutral to neutral. Hot, load, hot together. It works on and off. But will not activate with motion.

Correct, it will only work on or off since you tied the load conductor in with the hots.
Essentially you're bypassing the auto on motion function and have it wired like a standard light switch.

..............at least this is my understanding unless I'm missing something here.
