Club fitting

I had a club fitting today at Golftec. Very surprised that my previous clubs (ap2 714) were soo I'll matched for my swing. Got fitted for TM Stealths. Very pleased to be picking up the yardage. Interestingly enough, not much pickup on a driver or woods ( TM rbz) so I stuck with them. For now.
If you are on the fence about a fitting, it was money well spent.

The loft difference from AP2 to a stealth is 6°.
No wonder you “gained” distance.

Enjoy your new irons, I have heard some good things about them.

But what if launch and spin stay the same?

This is Golftec and the guy is saying an iron head doesn’t “fit” his swing. No mention of loft/lie or shaft which play a much larger role in a swing fitting than the head which is mostly for forgiveness, feel, and looks. He also said this guy couldn’t find anything to beat RBZ woods. I also find that suspect. Golftec has been known to be a BS shop. Prey on the naive by putting them in stronger lofts and claim it’s a better fit. By showing distance comparisons when the difference is a 34° 7i and a 28° 7i.
If he’s happy, more power to him. But it’s likely he could have gotten much more for the money elsewhere.
ETA: Golftec employees are also OEM staffers and try to push specific products regardless of fit. Good chance this guy was a TM staffer.

The stealth 6 iron is lofted like most 4 irons. Of course you are going to gain distance.
As someone else said getting proper length and lie angles is the most important aspect of a fitting, as you are getting clubs that actually "fit" to you.

Thanks for your expert knowledge. Just about everything you said was similar to what he said. Shaft in ap2s was too heavy, loft and lie were incorrect, clubs were 1/2 " long and I had way too much spin on the ap2s. I bought them off of eBay used. Played them for 6 years, always seemed to be shorter than my golf partners.
I hit 6 different irons, including pings, TM, Calloways, and mizunos. It went down to mizunos and stealths. I felt the stealths had the most forgiveness, and he said it was a clear winner of the batch I was hitting. Better launch, better spin (less) , and subjectively, more distance. I was happy to buy them. And it's my money, not yours. I'll sell the ap2s and get some of my money back.
I'm no pro, and my thumbs were torn up by the time I got to the driver fitting. Don't care if you call me a wuss. I was also worn out. I'll do another fitting in a month or so and see if I can get any more distance on my woods with different options. Looking forward to a 7 wood or 5 wood.
I felt the difference in feel, consistency and forgiveness was worth buying the new irons. Bday present to myself.

quote:Youre not a wuss. Most good fitters would never suggest fitting an entire bag in one fitting because nearly everyone would start to wear out. I realize Golftec offers a full bag fitting but it’s not smart or beneficial to do it all at once.

quote:The AP2 is a players iron. Pros use them because of the spin which adds control. They don’t need any help adding distance. It sounds like you definitely needed a fitting which I agree everyone should do once they feel like they have a consistent swing.

The general point I’m making is that you were going to add distance regardless going from a players iron to a game improvement iron. That alone doesn’t mean you got the best fit. Shaft weight isn’t the only factor in a shaft either. Stiffness and kickpoint are just as important.

So many factors from dynamic loft, sole, center of gravity, shafts etc...
I hit everything club high, always have, doesn't matter if it's a blade or super game improvement.
Golf is a game of skill and confidence. What looks good can equal confidence in pulling off the shot.
I never been a fan of GolfTec or Club Champion as a whole, but sometimes you happen to get a good fitter with integrity.

Doug,
Since you bought the AP's used, there's no telling, but I have little faith in Titleist sending out irons with correct lofts and lie angles especially on custom orders.
Anyway, congrats on your new sticks.

Speaking of sole, he wouldn’t have gotten a good feel for any differences off a mat. Getting the right fit for an amateur isn’t easy. People should take their time with it. If your only way to get numbers is indoors, that’s fine. But you should also try to demo sets as well and take them out on real grass. Outdoor fittings are almost impossible because most places use range balls and it creates so much bad data and feedback. A combination of both with some time on the course is the only real option for people like us… and patience.

Thanks for your insight. I'd agree I definitely needed a fitting. And from what I have learned, it wasn't the distance I was chasing, but more of the forgiveness...as it is what I needed. I'm definitely not a "player" in regards to swing speed and height. I'm practically a midget with alligator arms, and was playing too long of "player" irons. Now I know! New irons got my back spin and launch angle into the green, as opposed to 7000+ Spin and 24 deg launch angle.
Nonetheless, I really liked the feel of the stealths, and am hopeful I can shave some strokes.
As it relates to the driver, it's my best club in the bag as of now and even the "good" shots I was hitting with the new clubs, I wasn't gaining much in relation to spraying the ball all
Over the place. Probably some fatigue and definitely blisters preventing a good grip. Golftec could have easily sold me a driver, but they didn't try. He said let's do it another time...I was appreciative of their help and honesty. Same with wedges. Mine still had good groves and I like the way the sm5 vokeys I have feel and play. Those will be done next with the driver to see if there is any better options. I got the 4-aw in the stealths.
As for golftec, I'm not a member of a CC, and I don't have access to much else, especially for the $99 special I got as a gift.

Good point on outside fitting.
There is a golf store in Beaumont TX called Games People Play that had a driving range behind the store.
You could grab a demo club, walk out the back door and hit it on grass.

quote:Most Ams should be spinning a 7i around 6500 and launching around 16-18°. Most won’t have the speed or compression to spin it more and launch it lower like the pros. But an Am still needs the numbers to keep a 7i on the green and not launch off so a higher flight is typically helpful. Shape is also important as you would have naturally less spin and lower flight with a draw.
New irons got my back spin and launch angle into the green, as opposed to 7000+ Spin and 24 deg launch angle.
Just for comparison sake:
Pretty amazing how consistent the height is from club to club.

I don't disagree with anything you said, only pointing out that the lift argument is retarded. I don't know what's so hard about understanding that technology has come such a long way that we can play less loft and still launch and spin the ball. That's a good thing

Enjoy your new clubs. I looked at the TM’s also but decided to go with the PXG’s. I’ve always been curious about getting fitted but never messed with it . I probably need to one day.

If the loft angle is similar and spin is similar, why do you care what degree the club is?
I've said it before, but the naming of the club is irrelevant. The key is we have 14 clubs to put the ball in the hole. Pick the best 14 that work for you.
I could care less what clubs someone swings on a hole. I got beat this weekend by a guy hitting a 7 iron when I was hitting a PW. He was a better golfer that day. The clubs we were swinging were irrelevant.

I don’t and neither should he. But it’s good for him to know where the distance is coming from rather than thinking it was some magical “fit” parameter. If it gets him the right numbers, all good. But he wasn’t talking about numbers in the OP. All he mentioned was how he liked more distance.
