They absolutely can make you pay for your own internet. You can attempt to write it off at tax time, but no company is forced to pay for internet for WFH.
The SO is pre-COVID WFH and all they provide him is a laptop and their team manager bought them all a nice monitor setup for their home desktops through their team budget. Everything else SO went out of pocket for.
I also WFH at times (telehealth) and my boss doesn't pay for my internet or my laptop but I'll write them off.

Most homes have internet anyway, but like someone else said, you can start a business and write it off.

When my wife worked from home it was a requirement to have internet at a certain speed to apply for the job... they didn't pay for shite extra. They did provide the computer, monitors etc.
