I read somewhere that in the early days of football, the rule was three downs to get five yards, so the fields were marked in five-yard increments. When the rule changed to four downs to get ten yards, everybody else went to ten yard markers. LSU stayed with five.

I can't find the article to corroborate, so I could be lying.


Edit: The rule changed in 1912, so that part is true.

The link mentions something about a "Louisiana Network" started in the 1940's....but no mention of WWL, when did WWL start carrying LSU football?
