Yes, commitment to the sport and work ethic certainly matter. But, I believe you also have to look at the parents and siblings. How big is this kid going to grow? Is he the only athlete in the family? Are his parents and siblings even around for practices and games? Just some examples, and not the end all/be all, but you get the point - it's an imperfect practice. But, you have to do it if you want to keep up with the Joneses.

That kind of mirrors what I've read about scouting in the international market. That's pretty much the closest analogue to college recruiting, at least from an eval standpoint.

OMG 100% this.

Recruit the parents. You can fix anything you need to fix in the kids.

At the end of the day, you can see kids at 12 that will project to college in the field, on the basepaths, how they move, how they're mentally progressing, etc... but you can't see how they will hit quality pitching in the future. That's the ultimate separator.

And unless the kids is 1 in a million, you can't fix shitty parents.
