Not happy with off the shelf Tommy Armour driver, but I am afraid that what I would be fitted for now will be different in a couple years. Is it worth it??

Depends on your budget and swing speed.
If you can’t get decent numbers from your swing it’s probably not worth it, just buy a newer used high lofted driver with a senior flex shaft. If you have the funds go get fitted, it’ll probably be around $900 for a fitted driver. Where do you live?

Wichita Falls Texas. My swing speed is still decent, but I’m sure will go down each year. I have never been one to change often so yeah probably just a newer model.

at least look into it. Besides flex, the weight of the shaft and the kick point can make big differences.

You tend to get much better deals on sets of clubs vs a single club. Maybe a whole bag fitting to find the proper shafts for your bag might be helpful.

I would maybe try Golf Galaxy and see what your swing speed is. If it’s still decent you might get the shaft that fits you but get one of the new ones where you can adjust the loft. I’m younger than you and my swing speed is still pretty high but I can’t consistently hit a 9 degree loft anymore so I got the adjusting loft and just adjusted it until I found what I was consistent with. Being able to hit a good drive really adds joy to my round.

Get Fit, lift weights so your speed doesn’t decrease.

Look up callowaypreowned.com
They have a good buyback program where you can get up to 90% of the purchase price for store credit.

The shaft is the engine for the club.

The head is the hood ornament and what's visually appealing to you.

Every manufacturer has the same COR rating in Composites or Titanium.

Getting fit into the best shaft for your swing is your best bet. Kick points can vary from shaft to shaft.

My opinion is that you’re right and you can’t defeat age. Lift all the weights you want and exercise, you’re 70 and you aren’t going to start seeing swing speed increases and will soon see decreases. Why waste $600 to get fitted in some fancy driver when getting a decent driver off the rack with a senior flex shaft is going to work just as well for you. Additionally the driver you get fit into is likely to not be the one you need in 3-5 years where as a standard one off the rack could probably last you the rest of your golfing life.

Just my opinion.

95% of the posters here don't need to get fitted. The spend $900 on a driver and are still 16 handicaps with 98mph swing speed

Not at all. Head is much more important than shaft. CGs, actual loft of driver (they vary a lot even when the stated loft is the same) and lie angle are all important.

The biggest frick up in club fitting is getting fitted with a “demo” head and then ordering one exactly like it. You get fitted with a 9.5 stealth and order a 9.5 stealth and they most likely will be greatly different. TM is exceptionally bad at having the CGs all over the place. That’s why when a tour player is fitted, they take the head and shaft they’re fitted with and don’t just go get another one made up.

I’m in my sixties. Just got a new driver a couple months ago, hitting it better.

Really just boils down to whether you want to spend the money. If I’m able when I hit 70 I intend to be playing daily, so if it helps a bit I’d sure do it

OP, get fit and tell fitter you want a slightly lighter shaft than you get fitted for. Will buy you a few extra years of playing with it

Go to a place like PGA superstore. They will let you hit various drivers and give you a free fitting. I think it makes a lot of difference. I was surprised by what which one I hit best and ended up not liking the driver I went in to buy.
