Numbers crunch. He got offered a decent amount after being told might be best to move on since we had too many on the roster.

Dafuq? You think Jay would rather lose a proven high performer against SEC competition for an unknown new player who only faced lower quality competition?

Take this shite to the soccer board.

He could have improved his draft stock tremendously if he would have stayed. Instead he will sign for peanuts.

Gervase cost himself millions. He could have improved his draft stock. Now he is gonna flounder in the minors

He’d be a senior next year with no leverage. Team aren’t throwing millions at 23 year old relief pitchers.

Then he should have come back to school and concentrate on whatever his major was.

Y’all still think of the MLB draft like you do the NFL or NBA. It’s WAY different.

I don’t know what that means. He’s 6’10”, was drafted, and you think they’re just gonna not pay him any attention? I heard him on Moscona or Hunt, and he was very thankful of his time in Baton Rouge, but it was clear he was ready to get his pro career going. Coming back was a worst case situation for him. Granted, that’s not a bad worst case.

But He’s old, graduated, and probably ready to get started with his professional career. He was our closer this year partly by default. Yeah, he was good, but we’re gonna have 5 or 6 guys next year who throw harder. He probably won’t be the closer. He may not get as many innings next year as he did this, and the ones he does, may not be as high leverage. There’s no good personal reason for him to come back. He had a great season at LSU, but his allegiance is to himself, as it should be. He should go, get paid, and we should wish him all the best.

Ya know, it's his decision and I understand it. But if he was willing to sign the moment he got drafted, why did he feel the need to get our entire fanbase excited that he was coming back, the day before?

That part was just low.

I honestly think Paul didn't quite understand how the draft worked entirely himself and jumped the gun with his Twitter post after he wasn't drafted in the first 10 rounds because he didn't think there was any way a team could offer him his number after that but a team wound up being able to do so. He should have never sent the tweet until the draft was over but I think it was just an accident on his part. He's a great guy and hopefully he does great.

I don't see how he could not have known. If I know, and I am not the one with my name in the draft, how could any player not know? I think he knows exactly how this works, but he may have just assumed that if he hadn't been drafted already, that no one thought highly enough of him to give him his number. But you don't know what's going to happen until the draft is over, so maybe don't make a statement on twitter unless you've actually decided that you are for sure coming back.

The real money is when you get called up. These draft signing bonuses are essentially chump change when it’s all said and done, compared to the real pay day of being called up. So he didn’t really cost himself “millions”… maybe a couple hundred k but he’s betting on easily making up for that in a few years.
