You can get a casement window AC unit, which are thinner and taller, but those tend to be a lot more expensive than a standard window unit.
In a pinch like a hurricane or something, you can fit a regular window unit into your east-west window and cut a piece of plywood to close the gap and hold in place the window unit on top.
