Benson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Thomas Benson, Sr. and Carmen Benson. Tom Benson was born on July 12, 1927, the same year as the great flood of Louisiana before the Great Depression. His parents had four sons. They raised the boys in the St. Roch neighborhood, their lives rooted in the Catholic Church as parishioners at Our Lady Star of the Sea. He served in the U.S. Navy and then graduated with an accounting degree at Loyola University New Orleans in 1948. After school he worked as a car salesman at Cathey Chevrolet in New Orleans.
