It's little over an hour drive to Columbia from Florence. Ithaca is only an hour drive from Syracuse. Most people only fly a couple times a year if that. So moving to somewhere less expensive can easily make sense to them if they only have to make an hour drive a couple times a year to catch a flight.

Wife and I never fly out of Columbia. We always drive to Charlotte. Cheaper flights, and cheaper parking.

Yeah where I live has a little regional airport that has advantages for some flights, but I'm also 3 hours from Houston or Nola, so the key is to live in smaller areas that have options. You don't have to get away from bigger cities and live 6+ hours from big city options.
