It would have been funnier to work it out a few times with him being told over and over what a piece of shite he was until he got it to a manageable spot and then he used that line on the real guy and then filmed the real reaction.

100% that was the point. After everything that happened in the episode, the great lengths that Nathan went through to help this guy, he couldn’t practice what he preached when there was a possibility that the morally questionable thing that he did (subconsciously feeding him the trivia answers) would upset the guy so greatly. Nathan only wants to help people in an obsessive effort to be liked himself, to see himself as the good guy, and he chickened out when it was possible that confessing would cause the guy to be legit angry at him for what he did. He couldn’t stand the thought of this guy being mad at him.
