Bought a house a year ago that had a pebble garden in the back yard directly bordered by grass (no divider). Grass has started to intrude on the rocks and after a 10 day long vacation, I came back to find the grass had started growing over the rocks.

I'm guessing some grass killing herbicide would do the trick in the short term, but what are some things I can do going forward to keep the grass from intruding again?

Read up on bare ground herbicides, also known as soil sterilants. Pretty radical and long lasting, so make sure it’s the right way to go before you pull the trigger.

You need some kind of edging,,, it could be timbers, rocks, pavers or some rolled edging. It doesn’t matter what form it takes, as long as you can run a string trimmer along side it every time you mow.

Pretty much no matter what you do, there will be some weeds that are going to grow.

You can spray the area and lay down thick weed blocking material, but sooner or later weed seeds will find a way to take hold.

Cut and trim around the rock garden and clippings will find their way between the rocks and over time they decay and are ideal for weed seeds to take hold.

What kinds of trees are around?
If there aren’t any hardwoods close, spray some imazapyr. Nothing will grow there for 2 years

Aluminum landscape edging. Then edge it with your preferred cutting implement.
Herbicide to clean it up for now.

You won't be able to remove all the weeds completely anyway. There is no 100% method to eliminate all unnecessary things once and for all. It is possible to use a herbicide that will kill most of the weeds. Next, if you want to grow your lawn, there are 2 main factors to consider:
The first factor is the consistency of the soil and its ratio
The ideal formula would be 40/40/20 (clay + sand + organic).
The second factor is the acidity of the soil you can measure it with a soil ph tester and then, on the way correct it.
