Those are 4 solid college hitters. Hope 3 of the 4 are on the roster next season with outside shot that Doughty makes it all four and that they all stay healthy.

Missing link in Hattiesburg. Hindsight 20-20, the huge series Jobert had at Vanderbilt probably costs LSU that regional win. It forced Johnson to start him. If his struggles had continued, he would have been replaced by Dugas earlier.

The missing link in Hattiesburg was the pitching staff

I meant to the offense. We know the pitching was never good, but the massive disparity of production between batters 1-5 and 6-9 was why we could not confidently score runs. We struggled to lengthen many innings the way we could. When you have 0-fers from Jobert, Cranford, Bianco, etc. at the bottom of the lineup, you just have a huge limiting factor.

We all give Mainieri crap for not recruiting a pitching staff or only recruiting defensive players, but damn he sure did recruit these 4 studs! Gotta give him props there

You do realize this is the situation for 98% the teams in baseball including MLB.

Dugas was too bungee up to play much. He was hurting. If he could have started Stevenson would have sat.

I don’t think Johnson felt like Dugas could go more than 1-2 at bats. Otherwise, I think he would have started him at DH and put Jobert in RF in the Monday game.

Ok, but I think his point is that Dugas makes us better when he's in the lineup.

It's relative to without him in the lineup.

Certain guys have the ability to be ball magnets, usually based on either how close they are to the plate, or their ability to not move an inch when a ball is heading towards them, it can be a skill for some.

Definitely at a higher rate than the MLB but LSU hitters not named Dylan Crews stood on top of the plate. There is different reasons a player will do this. For some like Josh Smith or Tre Morgan their hands are so good they could still get to that inside pitch. For most it’s because they want be able to hit that outside pitch with power. A lot of college hitters can’t do that as well as a pro can. Dylan Crews can that’s why he isn’t afraid to stand off the play.

125 vs opponents 41 HBP! It was a bit extreme this year.

It seems that the new staff had the philosophy of the hitters getting closer to the plate and/or staying in the box on bad pitches.

Even Crews went from 2 to 13 HBP
Doughty from 3 to 10
Morgan from 14 to 15
Dugas went from 18 to 15 but was still HBP at a higher percentage since he had 122 fewer plate appearances in 2022

I give him props for having a third of a great team. In other words, I blame him for leaving behind a shitty team.
