Good morning OT,

I am once again asking for your boots on the ground advice. My family is relocating to BR and we considering Mercy or SJV (really our only two options due to full class sizes for the upcoming year).

Any thoughts on these two? Our house is in the Oak Hills area so I am also curious on which commute will make me want to kill myself less. I assume SJV would be easier going east versus north but what kind of morning/afternoon commute would we be looking at with these two?

Our Lady of Mercy on Government is pretty solid. But That is a hike from Oak Hills.

ETA: Moving to the Baton Rouge metro in about 4 weeks. Bought our house in October and have been renting it to the previous owner for a while. Honestly I can't wait to get down there.

St Jude and St George are closer than both of those to Oak Hills.

Traffic will not be good for either one. SJV will probably be better with the cut through by Women’s Hospital. I’d do everything possible to try and get into St. George or St. Jude though since they are right by your neighborhood. The Baton Rouge Catholic schools tend to bend rules if you donate enough money.

Um, neither are convenient to Oak Hills whatsoever. Like the previous poster said, that's St George territory. I mean, unless you like the anal rape of Baton Rouge traffic.

In what part of town is your workplace?

Mercy is probably easier if you are already going to north Baton Rouge (Exxon), mid city, Jefferson/Essen, or downtown.

Oh boy. Well unless you're relocating from Mogadishu, I wish all the luck in the world.

Mercy would be easier to get to IMO, but it’s my pick regardless of traffic. SJV seems to be academically less rigorous- depending on your kids needs, this might be good or bad. Also, SJV has iron fencing all around the core of its campus making it feel like a prison.

Mercy and don't look back. Kids that go there often stay friends for life with classmates.

I would not move to BR at all but if I had to, I wouldn't send my kids to schools across town (hours away). You will hate your life.

Since you said in a previous post that you'll be working on Jefferson near Drusilla, I'd probably choose Mercy. It's a great place with a thriving church and school. I have heard nothing but good things from parents and parishioners.

At least with Mercy, your work/school/home triangle will have some of the best stores and restaurants. Lots of fun places to grab food on your way home from Mass or school events.

But like others have said, St. George or St. Jude (both wonderful) are your best bets geographically. Even St. Aloysius will be easier than the other two.

All the Catholic elementary schools are the same. I sent mine to SJV and it was fine. She’s a soph at SMHS now.

SJV isn't much closer. If at all.
