You know you have to take them in (preferably every winter) and get them serviced? I take my toro mower, Echo weed eater and blower to Tubbs every January. I never have issues starting them. Only use ethanol free gas. Also, take the filter out every couple of uses and knock the dirt out. Sounds like you and your dad didn’t practice preventative maintenance.

My dad has an electric weed eater with two heavy arse batteries. It’s heavier and kind of loud also. And it’s hard to vary the speed on it. I’m not a fan.
