SI’s latest mock, based on rumors and buzz, has Shaedon Sharpe falling to us at 8.

Jeremy Woo does his mocks largely based on what he’s hearing around the league.

He thinks Sharpe is one of the hardest prospects to call where he goes and thinks there’s a good amount of trepidation on him now.

He believes that he could fall to 7 or 8 and both the Blazers and us could decide to trade back.

Thinks we are a good spot because he wouldn’t need to play at all for us next year, maybe even for two years, and he’s a guy that if he hits, it’s a big hit.

quote:

While Sharpe drew a lot of buzz from teams at the combine, some of that excitement has turned to trepidation over the past couple weeks, and it’s clear that a lot is going to hinge on how he handles his individual workouts. This is probably about as far as he could hypothetically fall, and he’s getting looks from teams in the top five due to his immense athletic gifts and shot-making potential. The issue is that it’s hard to expect a player who hasn’t played in many high-level game environments to really help an NBA team in the immediate future, and also that a lot of teams simply haven’t evaluated him for a prolonged period of time due to COVID, his late-blooming high-school career, and the fact he sat out at Kentucky.

Considering Sacramento, Indiana and Portland currently seem focused on making real improvements next season, the prospect of taking on a project like Sharpe might be a little less appealing in those spots, but at some point, his upside is hard to pass on. If he makes it out of the top six, he might become a trade target at No. 7 and No. 8, and it’s also possible the Blazers or Pelicans could just decide to take a huge swing on him. New Orleans is in a pretty flexible position with this pick, but if Sharpe were to unexpectedly slip, this would be a low-pressure situation for him to develop his game.

I can see him falling. His limited tapes, quality of opponents, haven’t played competitive basketball in over a year, and unimpressive pro day probably have teams nervous.

I’m not even sure the Pelicans would pull the trigger on him right now.

I’m willing to consider him at 8. Lots of potential upside and would have been considered for #1 overall next year if he had returned to Kentucky and done well.

Trading up to get him at 4-5? Less so. That’s the Darius Garland risk from when we got Jax and NAW, as I wouldn’t have wanted to spend the 4th on a guy who only played about 4 college games before getting injured.

I like that he is falling---Don't want to start that trend of 1-3 HS ranked guys not even playing because they still will be drafted Top 3-5.

We've seen plenty of times that those HS rankings don't mean crap. Bol Bol would have been a top 5 pick straight out of HS.

sorry but Pels don't need more young players they need to trade the pick for a vet in a position of need because they are young enough and need veteran leadership

Sharpe falling to us is HIS best care scenario.

We don't need anyone with pick #8 to come and contribute immediately. He will be able to slowly bring himself up to speed while learning to be a professional.

Im not a huge fan of Shapre but without a doubt this is his best landing spot.

when's the last time a draft pick didn't play for maybe two years and ended up being even a decent role player?

If he hits, the coaches will know it well before the season starts, just like with Herb. He might still take some time to develop into something special, but that doesn't mean it would be done from the bench or G-League for a year or more.

If you draft someone 8th and they can't get minutes and play in 60+ games this year, they probably suck.
People want to bring up Moses Moody with GSW and not getting minutes on a playoff team, like we expect to be next year. Klay played in 32 games. Damion Lee, Gary Payton and Juan Toscano Anderson all played significantly more than Moody.
Even Kuminga didn't play that much, but he still played in 70 games and got 17mpg. That's kind of the floor of what you'd expect from a top 10 pick, even on a good team, IF he's worth a shite.

Regardless of who we draft, if they hit, they'll be playing significant minutes off the bench this year and pushing to start in year 2.

I’m on the fence with this whole Sharpe deal. In a way, this reminds me of the Mitchell Robinson situation with less red flags.

Both Uber athletic freaky guys that didn’t play college ball. Both somewhat had character concerns, but at their core are probably actually good kids. (I can say this more about Mitch, than Sharpe). I have less insight on Sharpe personally. My bro played against Mitch in high school, so I know more about him.

Mitch was actually 1-2 years older than Sharpe when he got drafted. Mitch has panned as a quality nba role player despite the weirdness in college and playing a much different role in High School than he does in the NBA and he’s not quite in the same tier of Sharpe as a prospect.

Mitch got picked early round 2, so the risk reward aspect was different as well.

You really have to be sure about a kid to pick him top 10.

But what I am trying to outline here is this situation isn’t completely unprecendented and it’s worked out pretty well recently. The only thing preventing Mitch from being a surefire Top 10 in a redraft of his class, has been some unfortunate injuries.

The face to face interviews are what I would put the most Stock into in terms of making this decision if Sharpe is there at 8. Nothing else matters. He has the talent. Are you comfortable with the person? If you are, you take him. If not, you trade out of the pick.

There’s also the chance he’s warning teams off who aren’t on an obvious upward trajectory. If I’m Sharpe, I’d wanna be on a team I can learn for a while and then carve out my fortune just in time for my payday second contract to arrive.

I don't remember which coach said it (maybe more than one), but the quote was essentially..."it's not the guys you don't get that hurt you, it's the ones you do get that can't play".

One thing that I think is noteworthy re: Sharpe is he smoked at most of the EYBL and Peachjam stuff...scored efficiently and a bunch. So it's not like he is just a big frame, big vertical jump guy that needs to learn to play basketball.
