That's interesting since mine is possibly one of the oldest still in use. Pretty sure I have changed the chains at least once though.

I searched but could not find anything but an anecdotal "he said, she said" instance of a failure with an API chain climber. Nothing definitive or factually substantiated about what was the cause. Can you post a link?

There was a recall on the cable version that was taken off the market and was replaced with chains. Could you be referring to this? As far as I am aware, replacement chains are still available to purchase. I think they would have taken these stands off the market if they were as dangerous as you say.
