Reading back, I realize I didn’t specify college football. I ain’t thinking pro career. And I may not have stressed the “pound for pound” aspect as much as I assumed I had. And it wasn’t just the plays he made, it was WHEN he made them. When they almost literally HAD to be made to turn, save, or just outright win a game. And this was clearly a thread meant to encourage discussion. I obviously have not studied every college player of all time and their production relative to their sizes. (But there were some really really bad takes in this thread. fricking Clowney? GTFO.)

I was just watching some highlights and thought, as great as we still remember he was here 11 and 12 years later, was he actually even better? Is it possible he’s underrated?

We crushed everyone that year. Sure, you can argue some of his plays turned the tide. But go look at those scores. Outside of Alabama, we beat everyone by double digits. He was the player maker for sure but it was a team effort.

Ignore the deniers.

"Best" is subjective so it's hard to quantify. But as one who's been watching LSU football over 50 years Tyrann Mathieu was an original.

There has never been a player at any level that played with his instinct. Can't measure that but only observe and we were privileged to see him in P&G while we did.

Still not better than Barry Sanders:

2600+ yds (plus another 222 in the Holiday Bowl that don't count toward official stats)
7.6 ypc
37 TD (44 if you count the bowl game and all-purpose touchdowns)
