Perhaps I'm dense, but why didn't they send them in first? When we first went into Afghanistan, we sent the guys that wrote that horsemen book, and I think they were Seals. We didn't send the Massachusetts volunteer college professor brigade.

When it started Ukraine was at their most advantageous defense position they will be in for the entire war. They sent a bunch of conscripts and low level units to break that up and gain control of large areas of Ukraine. Now that they have control and safe passage into those areas they send in their best. Many of their best would have been wasted without ever firing a single shot if they sent them in first. Now they have control of a large portion of Ukraine and all of their best units still intact to finish the job that was started by using conscripts as cannon fodder. I’m not advocating the strategy but seems pretty obvious that this is why they would’ve done it.

Only problem with that is that, is that it isn't true.

There were multiple "elite" units that participated in the initial invasion. A lot of them won't be participating in round 2...they will be growing sunflowers though.

Far easier to crank out a anti-tank missile than an entire tank, crew, and maintenance for said tank.

Is there even a need for tanks at this point? I figured that conventional warfare was pretty much over.

Just because the Russians suck at combined arms warfare doesn’t mean the tank is obsolete.

Elements of the 1st Guards Tank Army have been there since the beginning and they fared no better than anyone else.

5th Group Special Forces aka Green Berets. Navy Seals already get too much credit.
