SIAP… evidently the Chechens have been vaporized.

“The armed group - famed for their barbaric violence and human rights abuses - are said to have been obliterated after their convoy of 56 tanks was blown to smithereens near Hostomel, just northeast of Kyiv, by Ukrainian missile fire on the second day of the Chechens' deployment. It is unclear how many died - but the number is likely to run into the hundreds.
Among those said to have been wiped out was Chechen general Magomed Tushaev. He was commander of the 141th motorized national guard brigade - Chechen head of state Ramzan Kadyrov’s elite force.”

If this actually happened, it would be hilarious. People acted like the Chechens were going to take Ukraine on their own.

Judging from the endless videos of broken down Russian equipment, win, lose or draw there's going to be one hell of a military surplus sale in a few years.

One aspect of this war is that Moscow has generally been trying to keep it hidden from the Russian public. They not only sought a quick & easy victory, but hoped to suppress news about the fighting, keeping images of mil operations across Ukraine out of the public eye.

Domestic perceptions likely a major factor behind the initial concept of the Russian mil operation, which seems to be driven by bad political assumptions, but also unrealistic timelines. The latter I suspect tied to a desire to hide a war that would be deeply unpopular.

This was true in the run up as well. Unlike the Iraq War, where the Bush administration spent months trying to mobilize domestic support, Putin did almost none of this until recognizing the DNR/LNR and declaring war. A quite risky strategy, particularly if things don't go well.

I know a few Russians and all of them are pretty upset about this attack. And I know they aren’t telling me what I want to hear because these are no nonsense people. All of them have friends and family in Ukraine so I imagine the prevailing sentiment in Russia won’t be that different.

Meh, he cares a lot about what his people think of him. Way more than sanctions and military setbacks. He does all of this for public validation of his legacy.

The Chechens getting killed off would be hilarious. Weren't these the elite guys that were given deck cards of Ukraine officials to hunt for.

Fascinating Twitter thread on how the internet / social media has been used during the invasion

Ex: google maps traffic showing Russian convoys, distribution of urban warfare tactics to Ukrainians by experts, distribution of Russian oligarch’s yacht locations, geolocation of munitions and my favorite new term “tactical shitposting”

Maybe we should strike russia while they're weak.

Do what we always thought they'd do to us..like a Red, White & Blue Dawn.

Yeah but if in his mind he’s correcting the wrongs of the collapse of the Soviet Union he almost certainly is willing to sacrifice some short term popularity for long term legacy

Although you’ve done the usual great job of sticking your foot in your dick, everyone should remain open minded to whatever bullshite could be going on, on any “side”.

Yeah but that’s not how your everyday Russian sees an attack on a country full of their friends and family. The longer this prolongs and impacts civilians, the harder this gets to digest domestically for him
