Sounds like why I left them. Kept getting handcuffed left and right, and paychecks keep getting smaller and smaller. Unless you had major accounts it was tough to earn a living. And same as the op said, I was spending more time facilitating the deal after it was done than I did making the deal. The days of selling a machine and moving on to the next deal were gone.

Glad I’m not the only one. I have a good friend who’s a major accounts rep and he sold 4MM more equipment in 2021 than 2020 but made roughly the same money

Correct. You better get what you need when you walk in the door. All bets are off after that. Especially if commission is in play.

Ouch! No need to make it personal with the folks in procurement.

You do realize they all think you’re lazy and overpaid, right?

I've received a raise every year for the past seven years. In fact, received two raises last year and two bonuses.

A lot of companies complain about lack of loyalty, and then hire people at your position for more money.

Spent a lot of years in sales and never saw one until I went to work for the company I'm with now and they hit us with a COLA of 7% this January. Blew my mind.

I’m trying to fill a sales position. We offer a very fair base plus commissions - with product shortages etc it’s been challenging for my guys. I’m our industry I’m finding it difficult to find good candidates .

My guys I have They are still making there money but with some things out of there control there has been some money left on the table. This is almost all industries right now.

I was able to get them a 5% bump it’s not 10 or 15 % but felt it was deserved and something for them.

I get a 3 to 4% raise on my base every year. Only time I didn’t was the first June during Covid.

You want a raise work harder and make more sales. A salesperson on commission that wants a bullshite COL raise is not a salesperson I want on my team.

Commission isn't always the answer to raises. Especially when your company keeps moving the goalposts on you and has you selling more for less pay than the previous year

I used to work in logging and we paid crews based on production. We adjusted logging rates quarterly based on fuel prices.

Now I work in outside sales (commission only) and drive about 30-35k per year. If fuel prices double or more this year I’ll defiantly feel it, but I already know my employer would tell me sell more to make up for it.

Not in sales but no raise since 2016. Actually with Covid hitting and company suspending 401k match for a number of months, no bonuses since Covid and loss of other benefits. Pay package less now then 2016.

Now add in inflation……

I’ve never gotten a COL raise in a 20 year sales career. I made my own raise by selling more.

This is exactly right. The goalposts are always moving and we typically update the commission plan 1-2 times per year and it never goes in the salesman’s favor.

Biggest problem right now is nothing to sell with inventory shortage. Machines that we typically have in inventory are currently 6-10 months out and we don’t get paid until they deliver. This year is going to be very tough
