What should I have done

Was picking up some deodorant at Walgreens today, when a kid (17-18 y/o HS male) in front of me in-line went to check out had an issue at the register. I saw he was getting Plan B and he was discussing the price with the cashier. The cashier calls out over the intercom for a price check and the kid looks embarrassed. Ultimately, they were out of the generic brand and he was gonna have to cough up an extra $20 for Plan B, but left Walgreens bc he couldn’t afford it. Should I have just given the kid $20 for it or was it right just letting it go? Either way he is learning a lesson.
