He was walking through mature pines with his head down. I shot him with my .30-06 at 1:45 pm. He didn't walk 20' and hit the ground. Hunted Hollins WMA (Talladega Nat'l Forest land) today since Cahaba WMA didn't have a deer gun shoot this weekend. It's about an hour from Hoover. Scouted yesterday, lots of fresh sign. I saw a logging operation on the other side of a gravel road yesterday separating the two properties. So I figured I should hunt on the edge of the WMA to pick off any deer coming from that logging land. Just like one of y'all said. It's about being at the right place at the right time.

Love Hollins! Great turkeys in that WMA if you’re into it.

Currently upriver on the Coosa scouting ducks in Ohatchee.

Nice Deer. I use to live about 30 minutes away from Hollins and did some of my first deer hunting there. I took my younger cousin there on one of their first doe hunts and he got his first deer on Hollins. All that was over 50 years ago it’s good to see the area is still doing well and brings back some great memories. Thanks for posting.

Congrats, but be careful, the buck in the first pic is bordering on being a legal deer in many states. In MS the min is a 10 inch inside spread...that the deer meets, but not by much. A good rule of thumb is don't shoot a buck unless the horns extend beyond the ears (usually 13-15 inches), this will keep you legal. Obviously criteria varies from area to area.

If you do shoot an illegal deer, for goodness sakes don't post pics of it on FB, especially under your real name.
