I’ve found The Second World War by John Keegan to be an outstanding read. Just enough detail to be knowledgeable but not overwhelming. Great insights.
Also Cry Havoc by Joseph Maiolo is a great prelude to the war and how we got there.

I just started The First World War by Keegan. I’ll have to check out this one next.
I would recommend Stalingrad by Antony Beevor.
