While the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. The Board of Education ruled segregation in schools unconstitutional, white Americans in several Southern states stood firmly against integration. In Arkansas the battle played out in the national eye. In 1957, nine African American students attempted to begin the school year at Central High School in Little Rock. The “Little Rock Nine” as they would become known, faced vicious racist protests. Images of the brave young students became iconic in the annals of civil rights history. U.S. Army soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division escort African American students to Central High School in September 1957 in this image.
