cbtullis, that's El Sol De Guerrero @ La Tiendita..also has a #2 location Old Hammond at West Muriel. It's one of my favs too.

Actually, #2 is on Perkins at Siegen, and they don't serve hot food there. #3 is on Old Hammond, the only taqueria that sells alcohol. On Muriel, it's Juanita's, a different taqueria.

The brother of Juanita is the guy that owns La Tiendita/El Sol de Guerrero, but the two businesses are completely separate and compete with one another.

Baton Rouge is definitely lacking in "upscale" Mexican cuisine. I went to San Diego a couple of years back and ate at a very expensive Mexican restaurant and it was exquisite.

That's because most Americans wouldn't get the difference. I used to eat at this upscale place in Mexico (still cheaper than U.S. restaurants), and it was basically the Mexican version of Mansur's or Ruths Chris. I don't think you could pull it off in most American cities, because people are too used to Tex-Mex here.

Cantina Laredo in Shreveport is upscale and pretty damn good. Seems like everyone loves mexican food and the restaurant selection is so crappy that we settle for places like Superior, Carretas ETC...

A guy in N.O. tried to make a go at one. But he was too much of a Nazi douchebag, and the stuff he was putting out was really not all that impressive for what he was trying to charge.

I'd love to see someone else make another legitimate attempt at one.
