While I understand the point you're making, the real key is simple.

Even if you were prone to believing some racists would want to do this to him based on his story, you'd have to believe

1. that a couple of racist dudes just randomly and for no advance planned reason, walk around at 2AM in Chicago carrying a bottle of bleach and a noose.

2. That the kind of dudes who would do this would also be familiar enough with the show Empire that they would recognize Jussie on the streets at that time and know he was the gay dude from the show.

3. That they also had Maga hats on.

Honestly, the Maga hat thing is the least absurd of the above 3. (even though it's absurd)
