Kelly has a history of hiring great coaches. For once I am not remotely worried about what this coaching staff will look like.

It's not just that, the guy left a Top 5 team because he couldn't compete with the Top 4. I think he knows what he needs to improve on over ND's teams to compete for a championship, otherwise he wouldn't have left his last job. It's not gonna happen in year 1 or probably year 2. It will be ok, if things aren't working he will make the necessary changes.

You should be only filling these officially when you make the OC/DC hires to see who they want to work with

Remember when coaches were supposedly told weeks ago they were staying on staff because somebody said so

Somebody said so

Three coaching positions have come open at LSU (two to attrition and one to retirement) and three hires have been announced.

One coach has been retained.

The six other spots are still filled. As spots come open there will be announced hires to fill said open spots on the staff.

Let's look at a hypothetical situation in which we announce the new OC. Do you think the old OC sticks around for bowl prep and coaching? Yes? No? Maybe?

If old OC stays on, new OC cannot recruit for LSU - not an ideal situation.

If the old OC goes:

Now the problem becomes who will be the OC for the bowl game? If the new guy, whose playbook and terminology does he use? The old one which the team knows and he does not - not an ideal situation.

Does he try to install a new offense in less than three weeks limited to 20 hours a week of football activity with no more than 4 hours a day. Football activity includes meetings, film study and practice. This also is not an ideal situation.

Does another coach from the old staff become the de facto OC (Davis? Mangus? Faulk?) - not an ideal situation.

Same would apply to the DC.

I believe that BK has his staffing decisions made, he just has to balance same with bowl prep and coaching with a shell of the old coaching staff.

If LSU was not in a bowl game this situation would be playing out differently.

I don’t think the link between on field coaching and recruiting is as intertwined as you are suggesting. Analysts are taking over the on field coaching for OL and WR for the bowl, but they aren’t heading out into the recruiting field. Worst case, LSU could announce the hires and wait for them to officially come on board.

The better point is whether Peetz and Jones would agree to coach through the bowl game if they knew they were being replaced. I think Peetz KNOWS he’s being replaced, but he’s still doing the job. More than likely the both have buyout clauses that would be nullified if they chose to walk away before the bowl. That payoff is what will keep them here.

One possibility is that they are trying to build momentum heading into the big recruiting weekend. They could be saving the big announcements for Thursday and Friday. I’m not saying they have made the hire, but I can see plausible scenarios in which they have.

Only the identified 11 coaches, 10 assistants and 1 head coach, is allowed to do the recruiting according to NCAA by laws Section 13. Currently all 11 positions are filled and it has nothing to do with GA or Analysts. It is very much intertwined.

LSU may not be in a position to announce the hires at the bequest of said hires. Do you think that the OC/DC of UC, Michigan, Bama or GA would want that to get out at this moment in time? How about the DC at aTm?

Don't forget bowl bonuses also. But, the fact remains with them staying there is no open spots on the staff for any new hire OC/DC to recruit for LSU. So, let's announce and also tell recruits that they cannot be in communication with the new hires, that would work out great.

I could see a scenario where announcements are made over the weekend with the Dead Period beginning at 12 am Monday December 13 running through January 13. However, any allowable contact on behalf of LSU during the dead period per NCAA by-laws would still be a no go until said coach was officially hired.

I still think they could identify the new OC and DC as part of the 11 and remove Peetz and Jones from the recruiting field. They just become “analysts” at that point. If they can assign analysts to on field coaching for the bowl, Peetz and Jones ought to be able to do the same as “analysts”. The point is that the 11 coaches assigned to recruiting now and the 11 assigned to coaching for the bowl are not the same 11.

I agree that LSU may have targeted candidates that don’t want an announcement now. I just don’t think bowl coaching staff is the impediment you do. Maybe this really is how it works, but it’s not apparent in other transitions. Of course I’m not paying attention at that level of detail.

Thank you for the Level 1 violation and the incoming probation. Does not work like that.

ETA: not to mention these coaches would still be employed by schools other than LSU.

Has nothing to do with bowl coaching. There are 11 coaching spots filled and they are the only coaches allowed to recruit on behalf of LSU. Until there is an opening in those 11 spots, no other coach can recruit for LSU.

I like how you are trying to parse hairs, but that will not fly.

That would be a breach of the the contracts that LSU has with Peetz and Jones, which explicitly states they are hired for the position of OC and DC respectively for the term of x years.

I understand what you are saying and you could be correct. It’s how I have understood it in the past as well. What is throwing me for a loop is how analysts are performing on field coaching duties for the bowls in place of Orgeron (with Davis designated as HC) and Joseph, but Brian Kelly and Frank Wilson are replacing them in recruiting. How does that correspond with the interpretation you are giving to the 11 designated coach limit?
