It's not the whole South that they hate, but, they definitely hate Louisiana and LSU.
They have to accept Alabama because they have simply become too successful to put on the same footing as the rest of the south. They are the premiere program in CFB, they respect the Bama program and give it its due because they are forced to.
Although I believe If Brian Kelly went to Alabama in 2006 in the same manner, they likely would be shitting themselves as well
I also think that if he went to Florida instead of LSU the blowback would not be as bad

They have been forced to begrudging accept their dominance under Sagan, but make no mistake:
